THIS ISN'T WHAT I WANT, YET IT'S WHAT I ASKED FOR "I wish you'd done better so I didn't have to!" BACKGROUNDChloe is the middle child of the Holloway family; born three years after her elder sister Rosemary and two years before her baby brother Alder. Chloe learned rapidly at a young age and it became clear early on that she was, as the boomers say, "gifted." What Chloe herself mostly learned was that doing things well -reading, art projects, making things, what have you- made her parents really happy. Her parents being happy lead to her getting praised, getting praised made her happy, it was a good cycle for a while. It took until Chloe reached her pre-teen years to start seeing the cracks in her own facade. Dissatisfaction from her siblings was the easiest to spot first; less than perfect performance from them was met with chastisement to be more like her, stellar performance from her more often than not was greeted by "this should be an expectation not the exception". And her academic pursuits kept escalating, past the point where she was able to breeze past without studying. And now any complaints or questions were met with disappointment and chastisement as well, since shouldn't she be able to do this? She'd always been so bright, she clearly just needed to try harder. Chloe was special, and gifted, and going to be the first of the family to get a big fancy degree and be a successful businesswoman and support the future of the family. Her parents had originally met as business partners, an attempted real estate agency that had never fully taken off on its own - Chloe was their chance at a sort of redemption, her success was their success. The solution, clearly? Shove it all down, project nothing but sunshine and happiness, be the good girl her parents want. Buckle down as hard as she needed to to earn good grades and juggle after-school activities, including helping her siblings as-needed. The closest she had to refuge was baking and cooking; instructions to follow, control over the outcome, a retreat into zen repetition once a recipe was known - and an acceptable hobby to her parents, as well as an easy way to gain praise from others. People rarely questioned being given sweets, after all. It even helped her lack of an actual social life or close friends as she went through school, everyone liked the girl who brought cookies in for the class, so she must be doing something right? But everything needs to vent sooner or later, and negativity put under constant pressure with no escape is eventually going to explode. The argument started over what should've been something innocuous, In at interdum erat, non scelerisque libero. Duis blandit nulla et diam ultrices, in ullamcorper dolor sodales.
